Competence development for youth work through trainings in the European youth programmes – Research Report 2025
Our new RAY COMP report on competence development for youth work through trainings in the European youth programmes is out! Read further for an overview of the key findings and recommendations that emerged from this research.
What is this RAY COMP about?
RAY COMP is a transnational research project exploring how training activities within the European Youth Programmes (Erasmus+ and European Solidarity Corps) contribute to the competence development of youth workers. Drawing on focus groups, surveys, and both semi-structured and narrative interviews, the project examines how competence development is supported through training. It takes a holistic perspective, bringing together insights from training providers, trainers, and youth workers to understand how training is designed, delivered, and experienced in different contexts.
What are the key findings?
The research highlights that training is not only a tool for acquiring knowledge and skills, but also a vital element in shaping professional identity, fostering motivation, and strengthening a sense of community. Youth workers describe training as transformative, with long-term personal and professional impacts.
Some of the key insights include:
- The need to recognise youth work competencies shift in response to evolving social, political, and digital contexts
- The importance of recognising youth work as a holistic, lifelong learning–centered professional journey
- The value of long-term training activities for deeper learning and impact
- The importance of clear quality standards, without compromising the flexibility of non-formal education
- The potential of mentorship, leadership development, and cross-sector collaboration to strengthen the field
